Islamic Differences

A striking feature of Islamic history is the marked differences that arose in the interpretation of some Quranic verses and in opinions expressed by Islamic thinkers on various matters, even some rather trivial ones. Marked differences have at times led to dramatic turns of events, to deep rifts between Muslims, to radical stances that begot much violence and shedding of blood, or to incipient doctrinal and moral corruption and degradation. These lamentable occurrences have led many to believe that The Almighty has forsaken Muslims, abandoning them to their fate, to the benefit of their adversaries.

In fact, all this can only be in accordance with His Will and Wisdom. The Quran plainly states:

And had your Rabb so willed, He certainly would have made mankind one community. But they cease not to differ, 1 save those upon whom thy Rabb has Mercy – and for this He created them. And the Word of your Rabb is fulfilled: “I shall surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together!” (11:118-119)

One should bear in mind that life is a trial for humans:

He Who created death and life that He may test you as to which of you is most righteous in deed, and He is The Almighty, The Ever-Forgiving. (67:2)

The contentiousness and differences are part of this trial. They could be due to ignorance, malevolence, or some ulterior motives. Irrespective of the motivation, everyone is accountable, if not in this life, then certainly in the Afterlife, subject to His Judgement, Wisdom, and Mercy. Muslims are particularly liable because they are expected to abide by the dictates of Islam. So may The Almighty guide us all and bless us with His Mercy.
