Shortest Surah of the Quran

Nassir H. Sabah

إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَر    فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ    إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ

The shortest chapter of the Quran, Chapter 108, consists of only three verses but has some truly amazing numerical relations, mostly based on the number 10.

  1. The chapter consists of 10 words.
  2. Each verse separately uses 10 different Arabic letters:

                  First verse:           ا  ن  ع  ط  ي  ك  ل  و  ث  ر

                  Second verse:     ف  ص  ل  ب  ك  و  ا  ن  ح  ر

                  Third verse:         ا  ن  ش  ك  ه  و ل ب  ت  ر

  1. 10 letters appear only once in the chapter: ع  ط  ي  ث  ف  ص  ح  ش  ه  ت
  2. Each verse ends with the letter ra’, which is the 10th letter in the conventional Arabic alphabet
  3. 10 chapters of the Quran end with ra’ : 5, 22, 31, 42, 54, 60, 97, 100, 103, 108, where Chapter 108 is the 10th chapter, and the number of the first chapter that ends with ra’ is 5, half of 10.
  4. The same six Arabic letters occur in every verse ا ن  ك  ل  و  ر. The sum of the order number of these letters in the conventional Arabic alphabet, starting with the first letter alef is: 1 + 25 + 22 + 23 + 27 + 10 = 108, the same as the chapter number.
  5. The second verse mentions “al-nahr” (وَٱنْحَر), the sacrifice of domestic animals following the example of Abraham, as also mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, and which starts on the 10th day of the month of pilgrimage (ذو الحجة).
  6. 5 (half of 10) Arabic words out of 10 in the chapter are found only in this chapter and nowhere else in the Quran: أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ الكوثر   ٱنْحَرْ   شَانِئَكَ   ٱلْأَبْتَرُ.
  7. The dot on the nūn in word “wan-har” is the 10th dot from the beginning of the chapter.

Amazingly, the dotting of Arabic letters and their ordering in the conventional alphabet were unknown at the time the Quran was revealed and happened some many decades later.

Can all this be coincidental?
